Fedorov and Zelensky discuss communication during power outages: results and plans
Meeting of Mykhailo Fedorov with Volodymyr Zelensky
Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov met with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the challenges in telecommunications during power outages and achievements in this area. The meeting highlighted the importance of the energy resilience of telecommunications infrastructure, which has become particularly relevant given the growing demands for communication stability.
Achievements in Telecommunications
Among the achievements discussed, it is worth mentioning that:
- Over 2.1 million homes have been connected to xPON technology, enabling high-speed internet access.
- Two mobile operators demonstrated a 93% increase in 4G coverage.
- In Ukraine, more than 50,000 Starlink terminals are operational, improving access to communication under unstable power supply conditions.
- As of today, 100% of base stations are powered by batteries, while 25% are using generators, which also enhances communication reliability.
Future plans include:
- Providing 97% of the population with constant 4G connectivity.
- Constructing 100 new base stations by mobile operators through an expedited procedure.
The government resolution No. 555 has granted local authorities the opportunity to maintain mobile communication during power outages, aimed at improving communication quality in critical situations. Currently, 60% of fixed networks operate on xPON technology.
In addition, the government has issued over 700 grants totaling 2.6 billion hryvnias, indicating active support for innovation in digital technologies. More than 4,800 developments of drones, electronic warfare, national missile systems, and other innovations are registered on the platform, which can become essential components in the future modernization of telecommunications infrastructure. Over the past 5 years, digital services have saved Ukrainians and the state 184 billion hryvnias.
'We continue to work on the energy resilience of telecom infrastructure,' said Mykhailo Fedorov.
He also emphasized that 'this year we significantly updated the grant program' and noted that 'the launch of these services is an important step in the ongoing fight against illegal schemes.' These measures reflect the government's focus on the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Ukraine, which is critically important under current conditions.
The development of telecommunications infrastructure in Ukraine is a vital aspect of ensuring communication stability, especially in times of energy crises. The government's activity in implementing new technologies, increasing coverage, and supporting innovation can significantly improve communication quality in the country, which, in turn, will positively impact the economy and everyday life of citizens. Strengthening the telecommunications network also makes an important contribution to national security, especially in the context of current challenges.
