Hanna Maliar's Analysis of the War in Ukraine

According to Главком: Former Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar has shared her perspective on how Western nations perceive the ongoing conflict. She argues that expecting empathy from the West is misguided, as their view of the war is often shaped by a desire to avoid distressing emotions. According to Maliar, Ukraine must focus on securing military aid and political backing, which requires communicating with Western countries in a language they understand. This reflects a broader challenge of maintaining international attention and support as the war continues.

Maliar pointed to instances where Western TV networks avoid broadcasting the brutal realities of the war, as its graphic nature is seen as upsetting for viewers. She recalled an event on Ukraine where a participant delivered an emotional, tearful speech.

"We will not erase the memory of these 2–3 days, nor will we turn off our phones" – Hanna Maliar.

Disqualification of Vladyslav Heraskevych

Separately, Maliar commented on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) disqualification of skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych from the 2026 Olympics. The ban was imposed because he wore a memorial helmet honoring athletes killed by Russian aggression during a training day, despite an IOC prohibition. Maliar contends the IOC's actions constitute a legal error and promote war denialism. Such incidents highlight the tension between global sports governance and national expressions of grief.

Hanna Maliar emphasized that Ukraine must adapt its approach to engaging with Western partners to ensure continued support during this difficult period.

Maliar's remarks underscore the complex communication dynamics between Ukraine and Western nations during wartime. While securing support is crucial, it is equally necessary to consider the perceptual filters and emotional sensitivities of Western audiences. The disqualification of Vladyslav Heraskevych further illustrates how international sports bodies often seek to avoid political controversies, a stance that can provoke outrage among Ukrainian athletes and society. These events point to the necessity for Ukraine to skillfully navigate the international landscape to effectively advance its interests.
