The flight, lasting over two hours, took place just before an airshow in the United Kingdom. During the journey, the aircraft simultaneously operated using both a turbine and electric power.
Technical Specifications and Testing
The test platform was a Saab 340B aircraft, retrofitted with a novel propulsion system. This hybrid design integrates an electric drive alongside a conventional gas turbine, allowing the two power sources to function independently or in tandem depending on the flight phase. The electric components-including the motor, batteries, and wiring-were housed in a dedicated compartment mounted on the side of the fuselage. BAE Systems manufactured the batteries, while Aurora Flight Sciences, a Boeing subsidiary, engineered the compartment.
Pilots initially conducted test flights in the United States before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the United Kingdom. Throughout the transatlantic journey, the aircraft operated continuously in hybrid mode, with the electric drive recharging the battery. This flight marks a significant chapter in aviation history.
