Turbogenerator Supply Deal for the EL9 Aircraft
According to НВ — Техно: French aerospace company Safran has been selected as the exclusive supplier of TG600 turbogenerators for Electra's EL9 hybrid-electric aircraft. The agreement includes an initial order of 250 units. The EL9 is designed to take off and land on runways as short as roughly 45 meters (148 feet), making it well-suited for small regional airfields. Its first flight is scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2030.
The contract between Safran and Electra covers the entire lifespan of the EL9 program, with Safran serving as the permanent engine provider for this model. The TG600 turbogenerator delivers 600 kilowatts of electrical power and is based on the Arrano helicopter engine, which offers 18% better fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor. The system also integrates two GENeUS electrical generators from Safran Electrical & Power.
Testing and Certification
The first bench test of the TG600 turbogenerator took place at Safran's facility in Bordeaux, France, in early July 2026. Certification of the EL9 aircraft is proceeding under FAA Part 23 regulations. Electra CEO Mark Allen described the deal as a major milestone for the aircraft program, highlighting the significance of this partnership for advancing hybrid-electric aviation technology.
