Ukrainian Military Reports Intense Fighting: 91 Clashes and Over 4,700 Kamikaze Drones in 24 Hours
Operational Update from the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff
According to Главком: The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff detailed intense combat activity across the front lines on April 12, 2023. The situation underscores the relentless nature of the conflict, now in its 1,509th day of full-scale war. Russian forces launched 840 artillery strikes on settlements and military positions and deployed a staggering 4,767 kamikaze drones over the 24-hour period. A total of 91 separate combat engagements occurred, highlighting the sustained high tempo of operations.
Frontline Situation
The intensity of fighting varied significantly across different sectors of the front:
- Southern Kharkiv (Siversk) Sector: 15 artillery strikes and one combat clash were recorded. Russian forces made 10 assault attempts near Synelnykove, Starytsia, Izbytske, Vovchansk, and Lyman, with one ongoing.
- Kupiansk Sector: Three assaults occurred near Petropavlivka and Podoly, one of which is still in progress.
- Lyman Sector: Russian troops conducted five assaults toward Lyman.
- Sloviansk Sector: There were five attempts to advance toward Rai-Oleksandrivka, Ozernyi, Kalenyky, and Riznykivka.
- Kramatorsk Sector: One enemy attack was directed toward Markove.
- Kostiantynivka Sector: This area saw 14 assaults near the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Pleshiivka, Illinivka, Novopavlivka, Kucheriv Yar, and Sofiyivka.
- Pokrovsk Sector: This was the most active sector, with 22 attacks reported near Bilytske, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Zatyshok, Hryshyne, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Molodetske, Muravka, and Novopavlivka.
- Oleksandrivsk Sector: Russian forces carried out five assaults near Oleksandrograd, Andriivka-Klеvtsovoho, Zelenyi Hai, Sichnevoho, Kalynivskoho, and Verbovoho.
- Huliaipole Sector: This sector endured 12 attacks near Zaliznychne, Varvarivka, Huliaipilske, Staroukrainka, and Myrne, with one assault still ongoing.
No assault actions were reported on the Orikhiv sector, and no attempts to improve tactical positions were observed on the Dnipro River sector. The frontline situation remains complex, with combat actions continuing across multiple regions of Ukraine.
The scale of drone attacks and artillery fire, combined with the high number of ground assaults, marks this day as one of particular intensity. The widespread use of loitering munitions, or 'kamikaze drones,' has become a defining feature of this stage of the war. This level of activity across all major sectors demonstrates the ongoing pressure Russian forces are attempting to exert along the entire contact line, more than four years into the conflict.
The ongoing escalation in hostilities has raised concerns within the military community, as highlighted by recent reports of significant combat engagements that occurred just days prior. This intensification of attacks further illustrates the volatile nature of the current conflict and the strategic maneuvers being employed by both sides.
