How a Ukrainian Border Guard Halted an Enemy Column Near Bakhmut: The Story of Hero Artem Popov

According to Главком: Chief Sergeant Artem Popov of Ukraine's State Border Guard Service was killed in action near Bakhmut on January 7, 2023, after displaying extraordinary courage. For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine on August 23, 2023. This honor recognizes his ultimate sacrifice in the fight for Ukraine's independence. The battle for Bakhmut was one of the longest and most brutal engagements of the full-scale war.

The Life and Service of Artem Popov

Artem Popov was born on December 24, 1986, in Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast. He began his military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, serving from 2015 to 2018. In 2019, he joined the State Border Guard Service to continue defending his country. He gained recognition on March 9, 2022, during the defense of a settlement, where he destroyed a column of enemy heavy equipment and approximately 100 enemy infantry soldiers. This action marked a critical moment in the struggle for Bakhmut.

Popov was initially buried in Dnipro and was reinterred in Irpin in 2025. His wife, Daria, stated:

'Your husband died a hero, defending the Homeland.' Daria Popova

Her words underscore not only his battlefield valor but also the profound grief borne by the families of those who have given their lives for Ukraine's freedom. Artem Popov thus remains in memory as a symbol of the resilience and self-sacrifice required to confront the enemy.

Artem Popov's service exemplifies the dedication and bravery of Ukrainian service members who continue to defend their nation under the extreme conditions of war. His actions during the Battle of Bakhmut were a significant episode in the broader context of military operations in eastern Ukraine, where the fight for every settlement holds strategic importance. The posthumous award of Hero of Ukraine symbolizes recognition not just of his personal achievements, but of the collective efforts of all who fight for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity.
