Kharkiv Metro Stations to Operate as 24/7 'Invincibility Points' for Residents
Metro Stations Become Round-the-Clock Shelters
According to Главком: In response to a severe crisis, Kharkiv will convert its metro stations into 24/7 'Invincibility Points' for public use. This urgent measure is necessary due to extensive damage to the city's heating infrastructure, which will leave many residential buildings without heat. The city already operates 101 such 'Invincibility Points' to provide essential aid to residents.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that people will be able to come to the metro stations at any time to receive all necessary support. Furthermore, the city is prepared to deploy an additional 50 tents to assist the population if needed. In a significant collaboration, the city is also working with 'Ukrzaliznytsia' (Ukrainian Railways) to establish a shelter based on a train consisting of six carriages, each capable of accommodating 50 people, providing space for approximately 300 individuals.
Expanded Support Services for the Public
In addition to the shelters, Kharkiv is operating 40 points for distributing free hot meals, offering another vital form of support during these difficult conditions. The situation stems from damage to heating networks connected to one of the city's largest thermal power plants, forcing the draining of the heat carrier and temporarily cutting off heating for 820 apartment buildings.
These actions underscore the severity of the situation in Kharkiv, where winter conditions threaten to compound hardships for residents lacking heating. The city authorities are taking active steps to ensure people's safety and comfort, aiming to mitigate the impacts of the energy crisis. The organization of 'Invincibility Points' and the cooperation with 'Ukrzaliznytsia' represent crucial efforts to provide necessary support for the population under emergency conditions. This comes as Ukrainian cities face sustained challenges to civilian infrastructure following the Russian invasion.
