Drone Assault on the Saratov Oil Refinery

According to ХВИЛЯ: In the early hours of November 7, Defense Forces launched a coordinated drone attack targeting the Saratov oil refinery, causing multiple fires across the facility. The Exilenova+ monitoring channel shared footage showing towering flames visible from various parts of Saratov. The videos captured numerous fire outbreaks, with smoke spreading over half the city from the industrial zone.

Reports indicate a large number of drones struck Saratov, though Russian electronic warfare efforts managed to neutralize some of the attackers. Residents recorded the presence of an FP-1 strike drone amid the assault. Despite deploying anti-drone nets and stretched cables as countermeasures, these defenses failed to stop the attack.

“Even anti-drone nets and cables were ineffective,” Exilenova+ noted.

Strategic Role of the Saratov Refinery

Owned by Rosneft, the Saratov refinery has an annual processing capacity of approximately 7 million tons of crude oil, contributing around 2-3% of Russia's total refining output. The refinery produces a range of fuels and materials, including:

  • AI-92 gasoline,
  • AI-95 gasoline,
  • diesel fuel,
  • marine fuel,
  • road and roofing bitumen,
  • technical sulfur.

Notably, the diesel fuel supplies vehicles and armored units within the Russian military. This attack follows a previous strike on the same refinery on September 11.

On the same day, Defense Forces also launched a missile attack against the Proton plant in Oryol, which manufactures optoelectronic devices, semiconductors, and electronic components. The Proton factory's output is integral to ballistic missiles like the Iskander-M and air defense systems such as the Pantsir-S1.

“Smoke from the Saratov refinery’s industrial zone blankets half the city,” Exilenova+ reported.

Local sources anticipate a "rain of petroleum products" over Saratov today due to the ongoing fires. These strikes form part of a wider conflict where both sides aim to disrupt critical infrastructure. As a vital hub for Russia’s economy and military logistics, the Saratov refinery is a key target for Defense Forces. The attack on Proton highlights a focused effort to undermine capabilities tied to Russia’s defense technologies, potentially impacting the country’s military readiness. The full repercussions of these operations and the responses they provoke remain uncertain amid escalating tensions.

The recent drone attack on the Saratov refinery marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This follows earlier strikes on critical infrastructure, including a previous assault on the same facility and the Proton plant in Oryol, which plays a vital role in Russia's military capabilities.
