Elon Musk Announces $20 Billion 'Terafab' Venture to Build World's Largest Chip Plant
The Terafab Project Launch
According to Главком: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the launch of 'Terafab,' a joint venture combining his companies Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The project's goal is to construct the world's largest semiconductor fabrication plant in Austin, Texas, with an estimated cost of at least $20 billion. This move comes amid a global shortage of advanced chips, which are critical for everything from electric vehicles to artificial intelligence.
The new facility is planned to produce two distinct types of chips:
- The first type is designed for Tesla's Full Self-Driving system and its Optimus robots.
- The second type comprises more powerful chips intended for use in space exploration projects.
Construction is set to begin at the Advanced Technology Fab site in Austin, which is already home to Tesla's corporate headquarters.
Elon Musk's Financial Milestone
Elon Musk has become the first person in history to amass a fortune exceeding $800 billion. His recent consolidation of SpaceX and xAI into a single technological entity boosted his net worth by $84 billion, bringing it to a record $852 billion. The total valuation of this newly formed structure is estimated at approximately $1.25 trillion. Prior to the merger, Musk owned about 42% of SpaceX, valued at $336 billion, and 49% of xAI, valued at $122 billion. Following the consolidation, he now holds a 43% stake in the new company, worth $542 billion.
In the context of these developments, Musk's Neuralink company also plans to begin mass production of its brain-computer interface devices, aiming to transition to a fully automated surgical procedure by 2026. Neuralink first unveiled its technology involving implantable threads that read brain information in the summer of 2019.
Musk emphasized the project's critical importance, stating: 'We either build Terafab, or we will have no chips. And we need chips, so we will build Terafab.'
Thus, the realization of the Terafab project is becoming crucial for the development of technological innovations in an era where demand for semiconductors continues to surge.
The launch of Terafab underscores Elon Musk's ambition to address global chip supply chain issues, which have become a bottleneck for numerous tech sectors. Creating such a massive foundry could significantly impact the semiconductor market, where demand has consistently outpaced supply. A successful Terafab could also accelerate technological advancements in various fields, as chips form the foundation for innovation in transportation, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.
