Analysis of Used Car Imports from the US to Ukraine

According to Главком: In May 2024, Ukraine saw a 12% decline in imports of pre-owned vehicles from the United States compared to the same period last year, totaling 3,800 units. The top-selling model in this category was the Ford Escape, with 410 units shipped. The average age of imported US cars in May 2024 was 6.3 years.

Among the imported vehicles, gasoline models accounted for 57% of the market, while battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 21%. Hybrids (HEV/PHEV) held a 14% share, diesel cars 5%, and vehicles with LPG equipment 3%. This highlights the diversity of options available in the used car market.

Top Models in the Market

The five most popular models, besides the Ford Escape, included:

  • BMW X3 (273 units)
  • Nissan Rogue (264 units)
  • Tesla Model Y (254 units)
  • BMW X5 (240 units)

All of these models fall into the SUV segment, underscoring the growing consumer preference for vehicles in this class.

Experts attribute the drop in demand for US used cars to logistical challenges and competition from electric vehicles imported from China and the European Union. This reflects broader trends in Ukraine’s auto market, where demand for new technologies and eco-friendly solutions is on the rise.

“The decline in used car imports from the US may signal a shift in consumer preferences toward more modern and environmentally sustainable transportation options.”

As competition from electric and hybrid vehicles intensifies, manufacturers and suppliers may need to adjust their strategies to meet evolving consumer demands. This could reshape Ukraine’s automotive market, where traditional models are gradually giving way to newer technologies.

The decline in used car imports from the US highlights a shifting landscape in Ukraine's automotive market, where consumer preferences are increasingly leaning towards modern alternatives. This trend aligns with the recent surge in electric vehicle sales, which rose by 49% in April, despite the reintroduction of VAT. Such developments indicate a growing demand for eco-friendly transportation solutions as the market adapts to new technological advancements.
