Foreigners in court for tobacco theft
Іноземців можуть засудити до восьми років позбавлення волі за крадіжки тютюну в Києві.

Investigation into Tobacco Product Thefts

According to Главком: Police have concluded their investigation and sent a case to court concerning two foreign nationals who were involved in stealing tobacco products in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. The two 22-year-old men were apprehended in March of this year immediately after robbing a commercial kiosk. The perpetrators broke the door locks and stole cigarettes valued at over 740,000 hryvnias. One of the suspects is also implicated in the robbery of four other kiosks within the same district. This type of organized retail theft represents a significant challenge for local businesses.

Indictments against the detained individuals have been forwarded to the court under Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a potential penalty of up to eight years of imprisonment.

Criminal Network Uncovered

In a related development, detectives from the Bureau of Economic Security uncovered a criminal network in the Kyiv region suspected of the illegal sale of tobacco products. During searches, excisable goods worth over 3 million hryvnias were seized. The scale of this seizure points to a serious illicit tobacco trade operating in the area. Ukraine has been intensifying efforts to combat the black market for tobacco, which deprives the state of significant tax revenue.

These incidents underscore a growing problem with the illegal circulation of tobacco products in Ukraine, which can have negative consequences for both the economy and public health. The measures taken by law enforcement indicate a ramping up of the fight against criminal groups engaged in such activities. The situation requires continued monitoring and investigation to prevent similar cases in the future.

In a related case highlighting the ongoing battle against illicit tobacco trade, authorities recently dismantled a significant illegal vape liquid production operation, resulting in the seizure of assets worth approximately 30 million hryvnias. This incident further emphasizes the pressing need for stringent measures against the black market, as detailed in our report on the illegal production of vape liquids that threatens both public health and economic stability.
