Iran Caves in Uranium Tunnels Ahead of Potential US Deal

Iran Tightens Security Around Nuclear Materials

According to Главком: In a move that could derail ongoing negotiations with Washington, Iran has dramatically boosted defenses around its stockpile of highly enriched uranium over the past few weeks. Tehran’s authorities have deliberately collapsed tunnels and rigged entrances to storage sites with mines, making it far harder to access roughly half a ton of weapons-grade material-a task now significantly more difficult than it was just a month ago.

These security upgrades followed public statements by US President Donald Trump, who left the door open to a potential seizure operation targeting Iran’s nuclear assets. Both sides had been edging closer to a framework agreement under which Tehran would transfer its enriched uranium to the US, where it would be destroyed on Iranian soil before the remnants were shipped abroad. The bulk of this material is currently buried inside the collapsed tunnels of the nuclear complex in Isfahan, though some may also be stored at other undisclosed sites.

Negotiation Hurdles Mount

Experts are now warning of fresh obstacles in the talks. Scott Rucker, a nuclear security specialist, commented:

'If this report is accurate, it will certainly complicate the removal of highly enriched uranium.' Scott Rucker, nuclear security expert

He added: 'We could never be fully confident that Iran wouldn’t be able to retain access to it in the future.'

As a reminder, in mid-May, US military planners weighed a direct extraction operation but ultimately scrapped it due to excessive risk. Meanwhile, Washington and Tehran have already agreed on the text of a preliminary deal to resolve Iran’s nuclear program. That agreement would require Iran to abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons and settle the fate of its enriched uranium stockpile in exchange for a phased easing of American sanctions.

Iran’s heightened protection of its nuclear materials underscores the growing tension in US-Iran relations, which may complicate further diplomacy. Given previous failed attempts to reach a settlement, such actions could present fresh challenges for international efforts to monitor and control nuclear programs. The outcome of these talks will not only shape regional security but also have broader implications for global nuclear disarmament efforts.

The ongoing complexities surrounding Iran's nuclear program are further highlighted by recent developments regarding the elimination of nuclear materials at various sites. As negotiations progress, it's crucial to examine how these efforts align with the broader framework of the potential agreement. For a detailed overview of the planned destruction of nuclear materials at three Iranian locations, see this report.
