Gaza Tragedy and New Israeli Legislation

According to Главком: On May 6, 2025, Azzam al-Hayya, the son of Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. The strike targeted a building in the Ad-Daraj neighborhood, and Israeli officials confirmed the elimination of the militant.

The al-Hayya family has suffered heavy losses in previous years. In 2007, an Israeli strike on the al-Hayya home in the Shujaiya neighborhood killed 7 or 8 relatives, including his wife, three children, and three brothers. In 2008, one of al-Hayya's sons, who commanded a rocket unit, was killed by the IDF. During the Gaza operation in July 2014, another son, daughter-in-law, and grandson died in a strike on al-Hayya's house. Most recently, on September 9, 2025, Khalil al-Hayya survived an Israeli attack on a Hamas facility in Doha, but his son Himam and office manager Jihad Labad were killed in the blast.

New Legislative Moves

Separately, the Israeli parliament approved a new death penalty law that mandates execution by hanging for murders committed with nationalist motives. The law passed with 62 votes in favor and 48 against. It sets execution as the default punishment in military courts for Palestinians from the West Bank, though judges retain the option to substitute life imprisonment in exceptional cases. This legislation is the result of efforts by the far-right coalition led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The recent events in Gaza and the new legal measures in Israel highlight the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups. The killing of Azzam al-Hayya underscores the persistent cycle of violence in the region and could impact future security dynamics and relations between the parties. Meanwhile, the passage of the death penalty law signals a growing far-right influence in Israeli society and may further complicate the situation for Palestinians, potentially triggering new protests or an escalation of violence.

In the context of rising tensions, the recent killing of Azzam al-Hayya and the new death penalty legislation highlight the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
