Canada Announces Major New Military Aid Package for Ukraine
According to Главком: Canada has unveiled a new $2 billion US military aid package for Ukraine, scheduled for delivery in the 2026-2027 fiscal year. This substantial commitment underscores Canada's steadfast support for Ukraine's sovereignty in the face of ongoing conflict. The package includes the transfer of over 400 armored vehicles and an extension of the Canadian military training mission, UNIFIER, through 2029. Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty emphasized that this decision reflects Canada's unwavering dedication to Ukraine's fight for freedom.
Details of the Assistance Package
The armored vehicles to be provided to Ukraine include:
- 66 LAV 6 armored combat vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics
- 383 Senator armored vehicles from Roshel
According to the announcement, the size of the Canadian contingent in the UNIFIER mission will be increased, enabling additional support for training Ukrainian military personnel. This aid comes as Ukraine continues to defend its territory and rebuild critical infrastructure.
The package also allocates an additional $20 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. In a related move, Canada has imposed new sanctions against Russian individuals, entities, and vessels in the so-called shadow fleet, while also lowering the price cap on Russian oil. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that these steps highlight the importance of Canada-Ukraine cooperation in addressing contemporary security challenges. This comprehensive support package demonstrates Canada's long-term commitment to Ukraine, particularly amid escalating regional security threats, and aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and military training. Such initiatives are seen as crucial for stabilization, while the sanctions against Russia signal international solidarity with consequences for long-term economic relations.
