According to ХВИЛЯ: On the morning of October 4, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train for a confidential visit. He was welcomed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. Accompanying Merz were Economy Minister Katharina Reiche and a delegation from the defense and energy sectors. According to Reuters, business leaders from Siemens Energy, Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, and Quantum Systems were part of the group.
Significant Military and Energy Support Unveiled
During his visit, Merz is set to reveal a military aid package totaling €1 billion for Ukraine, alongside an additional €350 million dedicated to repairing the country’s energy infrastructure. The Chancellor also plans to formalize an agreement on joint drone production, including interceptor drones designed to counter Russia’s jet-powered attack UAVs. Merz pledged rapid delivery of thousands of these drones to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In his statements, Merz emphasized the critical need to back Ukraine.
“I have come to Kyiv today because Ukraine will need our support in the coming weeks. If Russia is not stopped, its military machine will sooner or later turn against us,”
he said. He also highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of terror:
“People are about to face their fifth winter of war. Russia continues to bomb cities, residential areas, and power plants.”
The Chancellor also called on the Ukrainian government to advance reforms, particularly in combating corruption.
“I will tell President Zelensky today: you can continue to rely on our support,”
Merz added. He stressed the importance of the Germany-Ukraine partnership, noting,
“Our partnership is not a one-way street. It strengthens our security and makes us stronger.”
This marks Merz’s second visit to Ukraine as Chancellor, following his initial trip in May 2025.
