Record-Breaking Sale of 'Generous Planet' at Sotheby’s

According to Главком: A painting by Ivan Marchuk achieved a new personal auction milestone at Sotheby’s, selling for €96,000. The artwork, titled 'Generous Planet', was created in 1994 while the artist was living in the United States and had remained in a private collection there. The sale took place as part of the Modern & Contemporary Discoveries auction, which ran from May 26 to June 2.

The pre-sale estimate for the piece ranged from €40,000 to €60,000, but the final price far exceeded expectations. Ivan Marchuk shared his excitement about the achievement on his Facebook page:

“The lot just sold for €96,000. A personal auction record at Sotheby’s! The work was in a private collection in the USA. Congratulations to the new owner!” - Ivan Marchuk

He also added, 'Today, my still life, created in Manhattan (New York) during my emigration to the United States, will find a new home. Every artwork has its own destiny...'

This painting became one of the top lots of the auction, underscoring the enduring appeal of Marchuk’s work. It is worth noting that the artist’s all-time auction record was set earlier, in 2024, at the Goldens auction house in Kyiv, where his painting 'The Moon Rose Over the Dnipro' (1980) sold for $300,000 USD.

Ivan Marchuk’s 90th Birthday and Artistic Legacy

On May 12, Ivan Marchuk celebrated his 90th birthday, and to mark the occasion, a permanent exhibition of his works opened at the 'Chocolate House' art center in Kyiv. Marchuk is a People’s Artist of Ukraine and a recipient of the Taras Shevchenko Prize, and his art continues to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts. A significant recognition of his talent came when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded him the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Fifth Class.

The success of 'Generous Planet' at Sotheby’s not only highlights Marchuk’s importance in the art world but also marks key milestones in his career. This record sale reflects the growing international interest in Ukrainian contemporary art and reinforces Marchuk’s status as a leading Ukrainian artist whose work continues to inspire new generations. Given his recent achievements, his pieces are expected to remain a focal point for collectors and art historians alike.
