After Years of Attacks, Kerch Bridge Loses Its Military Logistics Importance for Russia

Overview of Ukraine's Strikes on the Kerch Bridge

From 2022 through 2026, Ukrainian forces continuously targeted the bridge, inflicting significant damage that undermined its operational role. At the annual Yalta European Strategy conference, Major General Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, explained that the bridge no longer holds a pivotal position in Russia’s military logistics. Instead, Russian troops have rerouted their supply chains through the Rostov region and established a land corridor in southern occupied Ukraine after Ukraine’s Defense Forces disrupted key routes to Crimea.

Despite losing its logistical function, the Kerch Bridge remains a potent symbol for the Kremlin’s control over Crimea. As Skibitskyi noted,

“For Russia, for Putin, the Kerch Bridge represents the occupation of Crimea… It may also serve as one of the few ways for Russian occupiers to return home.”

Timeline of Ukrainian Operations Against the Kerch Bridge

Ukraine’s attacks on the bridge have grown increasingly intense over time. The first successful strike occurred in October 2022, when a truck bomb caused two spans of the road section to collapse and damaged the railway line. In July 2023, Ukrainian naval drones known as Sea Baby targeted the bridge, damaging the road surface and disrupting Russian military supply efforts.

In June 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted a third major assault using an underwater explosion with 1,100 kilograms of TNT equivalent, which damaged the underwater supports of the bridge’s pillars, leaving it in a critically unstable condition. The most recent attack took place on the night of April 30, 2026, when the Ukrainian Navy struck Russian patrol boats guarding the bridge.

Once a source of concern for Western allies due to the risk of nuclear escalation, the Kerch Bridge’s strategic value to Russia has considerably diminished. The combination of disrupted supply routes and repeated Ukrainian strikes has reshaped the military landscape in southern Ukraine. This shift not only highlights Ukraine’s progress in countering Russian aggression but also signals potential changes in the operational plans of both sides moving forward.
