Deadly Neglect in Kyiv: A Case of Animal Cruelty

According to Главком: A 37-year-old man in Kyiv now faces criminal charges after leaving his dog to die on a balcony during a heatwave. The incident took place in the Teremky neighborhood, where the owner of a French bulldog named Rafik reportedly abandoned the animal without food, water, or any shade from the sun. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight ultimately killed the dog.

The case came to light after a horrified resident of the apartment complex reported the situation to the police. During their investigation, officers interviewed neighbors and gathered additional details about how the animal had been treated. Witnesses stated that the man not only neglected Rafik but also physically abused him, frequently tying the dog to trees.

Legal Consequences

Based on the evidence collected, investigators from the Holosiiv Police Department formally charged the man under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which penalizes animal cruelty resulting in death.

“The dog was left under direct sunlight for an extended period without access to water, food, or any way to escape the heat. The prolonged high temperatures led to the animal’s death,” police officials reported.

The charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years.

This tragic event has sparked outrage among local residents and animal rights advocates. Animal cruelty remains a serious concern in Ukraine, and such cases highlight the urgent need for stricter oversight of pet ownership. Public vigilance and prompt reporting to law enforcement are crucial to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
