Freezing Rain Forecast for Kyiv and Region

According to Главком: Cloudy weather with light snow and dangerous freezing rain on roads is forecast for Kyiv and the surrounding region on February 5th. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, air temperatures in the capital will range from -4°C to -6°C, while the region can expect -3°C to -8°C. A southeastern wind of 7–12 m/s is predicted. By the morning of February 5th, the air temperature is expected to drop to -8°C with a relative humidity of 93%. Atmospheric pressure during this period will be 749 mmHg. Freezing rain, or glaze ice, creates a particularly treacherous, transparent layer of ice on surfaces, making roads and sidewalks extremely hazardous.

Appeal to Medical Institutions

Data from the Kyiv City State Administration's Department of Health indicates that approximately 180 city residents seek treatment at trauma centers daily during winter. Roughly 20% of these cases require hospitalization. The most common injuries sustained by Kyiv residents in winter include:

  • Limb fractures
  • Joint dislocations
  • Ligament damage
  • Contusions

In response to these risks, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko held a meeting with heads of the capital's district state administrations to discuss preparatory measures for the dangerous weather. This proactive approach is common in cities with harsh winters to mitigate public risk.

Municipal services are actively preparing for the potential impacts of the freezing rain to ensure road safety and reduce public injuries.

The preparedness of utility services and local authorities is a critical element in preventing injuries and ensuring resident safety during winter weather conditions. Freezing rain can significantly complicate movement around the city, making timely road clearing and public warnings about the dangers a priority for city services. It is vital for residents to exercise caution when moving about in such conditions to avoid injuries and accidents.
