Південна Корея розробляє стратегію у відповідь на вибачення Києва за оприлюднення інформації про військовополонених.

Ukraine’s Apology and South Korea’s Response

According to ХВИЛЯ: Kyiv has issued an apology to South Korea for disclosing information regarding the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war. However, Seoul considers these apologies insufficient and is preparing to take further action in response. South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun, noted that while Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha conveyed apologies, they fell short of expectations, prompting Seoul to consider firm measures.

Details on the North Korean Soldiers

The two North Korean soldiers, captured by Ukraine early in 2023, were fighting alongside Russian forces. South Korean officials have expressed concerns that the families of these prisoners might become targets of the North Korean regime. South Korean media had already identified both soldiers before their arrival in Ukraine.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol indicated that more decisive steps could follow if Ukraine fails to issue a public apology.

“It would be wrong to hide the whereabouts of any prisoners.” – Dmytro Lytvyn, Advisor to the President of Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the transfer of the prisoners during his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 23. In light of these developments, South Korea is considering recalling its ambassador to Ukraine, Park Hee-chan, a move that could further strain diplomatic relations between the two nations.

This episode highlights the delicate nature of Ukraine–South Korea relations amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and its broader regional security implications. The Ukrainian apology has not satisfied South Korea, raising the possibility of diplomatic repercussions such as an ambassadorial withdrawal. It also underscores the sensitivity surrounding prisoners of war linked to North Korea and the potential risks posed to their families under the regime’s policies.

As tensions escalate between Kyiv and Seoul, it's crucial to understand the broader implications of this diplomatic rift. In a related development, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has issued a warning to Ukraine regarding the disclosure of prisoner transfer details, further complicating the situation. This warning reflects the heightened sensitivity surrounding the treatment of prisoners of war and the potential fallout for Ukraine's international relations.
