When to Bake Easter Cake on Easter-2026: What Days Are Forbidden

Baking Easter Cake remains one of the main Easter traditions, but not all days are considered appropriate for this. A priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church explained when it is best to prepare the festive bread in 2026 and which restrictions are merely superstitions. This is what TSN writes.

Easter Cake symbolizes resurrection and new life, so it is advised to approach its preparation with a special mindset. According to Father Ivan Petrushchak, the best day for baking is traditionally considered Clean Thursday, which falls on April 9, 2026. It is also permitted to bake Easter cakes on Great Saturday, i.e., April 11, the day before the holiday.

When to Bake Easter Cake 2026: Best Days for Baking

The priest advises choosing days when there is an opportunity to focus on the process and prepare spiritually. In particular:

• Clean Thursday (April 9) — the main day for cleaning and baking

• Great Saturday (April 11) — an allowed option before the holiday.

Before starting the preparation, it is recommended to pray. The "Our Father" is most often read, or one can address God in their own words asking for blessings on their work.

Prohibitions on Baking Easter Cakes: What the Church Says

The priest emphasizes that widespread restrictions regarding women have no church basis. In particular, the myths concern:

• baking during menstruation

• preparing during pregnancy.

The Church does not prohibit making Easter cake during these periods. At the same time, it is important to consider one's well-being and not do this by force.

The priest advises to act sensibly: if a person feels exhausted or is not in the mood, it is better to postpone the preparation.

Easter cake is traditionally placed in the Easter basket along with other products and blessed in the church. It remains one of the main symbols of the Resurrection holiday in Ukraine.
