Sign Language Translation of Ukraine's Constitution Completed

According to Главком: A full translation of Ukraine’s Constitution into Ukrainian Sign Language has been created to mark the document’s 30th anniversary. The project involved nine interpreters fluent in various dialects of Ukrainian Sign Language. Legal experts and specialists in Ukrainian Sign Language also joined the team to ensure the translation’s accuracy and high quality.

This milestone coincides with Constitution Day celebrations in Ukraine, observed annually on June 28. On that date in 1996, the Constitution was officially adopted with 315 votes in favor. Oleksandr Moroz brought the document to a final vote under the supervision of then-President Leonid Kuchma.

The Verkhovna Rada has stated that this translation will help make constitutional rights and norms more accessible to people with hearing impairments, marking another step toward a barrier-free society.

Why This Translation Matters

The translation of the Constitution into Ukrainian Sign Language represents a major advance in making legal information accessible to the deaf community. It reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to integrate all citizens into public life and ensure equal opportunities. This initiative is expected to boost legal awareness among people with hearing impairments and simplify their interactions with state institutions.
