Ukrainian Hryvnia Holds Steady at 43 to the Dollar: Key Factors Explained

According to ХВИЛЯ: An analysis of Ukraine's foreign exchange market in mid-February reveals a period of notable stability. The U.S. dollar exchange rate has settled around 43 hryvnias, a point confirmed by Taras Lesovyi, Director of the Financial Markets and Investment Activity Department at Globus Bank. Despite challenging external and internal economic conditions, the currency market is showing resilience, with fluctuations around the 43-hryvnia mark not indicating any significant destabilization. This stability is a positive sign for a nation whose economy has faced considerable pressure.

How the Tax Payment Season Affects the Currency Market

The tax payment period traditionally influences the market, but the National Bank of Ukraine continues its policy of managed flexibility. Global quotes for the euro/dollar pair are expected to remain in the 1.18-1.20 range. Daily exchange rate fluctuations at currency exchange booths are not expected to exceed 30 kopiyok, while the spread between buying and selling rates will range from 60 kopiyok to 1 hryvnia. Over a week, the currency's value is projected to change by no more than 1-1.5%.

On the cash market, the dollar rate fluctuates within 42.50-43.50 hryvnias, while on the interbank market it stands at 42.75-43.25 hryvnias. The euro rate varies between 50 and 52 hryvnias. Key exchange rate benchmarks remain within expected corridors, contributing to overall currency market stability.

The dollar's stability at 43 hryvnias may indicate sustained confidence in the national currency, despite the challenges facing the Ukrainian economy. The actions of the National Bank, aimed at supporting the hryvnia through a policy of managed flexibility, are also likely influencing the market's long-term stability.

Given the forecasted fluctuations, the primary factors affecting Ukraine's foreign trade and investment climate remain crucial for the currency's trajectory.
