La Rinconada: The World’s Highest Permanent Settlement

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Perched high in the Peruvian Andes at approximately 5,100 meters (16,700 feet), La Rinconada holds the distinction of being the highest permanently inhabited town on Earth. Despite its extreme altitude and difficult living environment, it attracts tens of thousands of people drawn by the promise of gold mining. Around 50,000 residents live in makeshift metal shacks, lacking basic amenities such as heating, bathrooms, and running water.

Gold Mining Under Risky Conditions and Environmental Impact

The town’s economy revolves around artisanal gold mining, where miners work in perilous underground tunnels. These cramped shafts pose constant dangers including collapses, explosions, and exposure to toxic gases. Payment in these mines is irregular-miners may labor for weeks without wages, only occasionally earning the right to keep all the gold they extract in a single day.

La Rinconada also faces severe ecological challenges. The use of mercury and other chemicals in gold extraction contaminates the surrounding soil and water sources. Additionally, large piles of garbage accumulate on the outskirts of the town, further damaging the fragile mountain environment.

These factors combine to make La Rinconada not only a remarkable example of high-altitude human settlement but also one of the most challenging places to live. Around the world, other unusual towns face their own unique obstacles, such as:

  • The submerged hydrothermal field known as the 'Lost City,' located over 700 meters below sea level with formations reaching about 60 meters high;
  • The Chinese city of Yanjing, home to approximately 400,000 people, situated in a narrow valley between two mountains where the width narrows to about 30 meters in places.

La Rinconada remains a striking example of human resilience at extreme altitudes, despite the many hardships its inhabitants endure.

This town illustrates how economic incentives like gold mining can draw people to live under harsh and hazardous conditions. While there are financial opportunities, residents face significant health and safety risks, highlighting urgent ethical considerations surrounding resource extraction. Comparing La Rinconada with other extraordinary settlements worldwide reveals common struggles communities face, despite vastly different geographic settings.
