Latvian Athletes Take a Stand at Junior World Championships

According to Главком: At the Junior World Skeleton Championships in Altenberg, Germany, Latvian athletes Kamila Krustina and Renars Jumikis refused to take photos with their Russian counterparts. This act of protest occurred against a tense political backdrop, as one of the Russian athletes, Yeremiy Zikov, had visited annexed Crimea in 2022 and publicly liked social media posts featuring the pro-war 'Z' symbol. Despite this, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) had recognized Zikov as a neutral athlete. The sport of skeleton, like many others, has been navigating the complex issue of Russian and Belarusian participation since the invasion of Ukraine.

In the mixed team relay, Krustina and Jumikis won the silver medal, finishing behind the German winners, Marie Aangerer and Martin Buchheim, who heard their national anthem during the medal ceremony. The bronze medals went to the Russian pair of Polina Knyazeva and Yeremiy Zikov. Following the ceremony, the Latvian athletes left the podium, a clear and public reinforcement of their stance.

Ukrainian Prodigy Secures Historic Double Victory

A highlight of the championships was the performance of Ukrainian skeleton racer Yaroslav Lavreniuk, who became a double junior world champion by winning gold in both the U20 and U23 categories. The 18-year-old repeated his success from the previous year, when he won Ukraine's first-ever U20 World Championship gold in skeleton in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

"Bravo, Latvia!"

– spectators cheered, showing support for the athletes' performances.

The final standings for the junior men's event at the World Skeleton Championships were as follows:

  • 1. Yaroslav Lavreniuk (1.53,52)
  • 2. Davis Valdovskis (1.53,70)
  • 3. Yu Gocin (1.59,28)

The Latvian athletes' refusal to participate in photos with Russians underscores the ongoing political tensions stemming from the war in Ukraine, with such actions widely viewed as gestures of solidarity. Meanwhile, Yaroslav Lavreniuk's remarkable double-gold achievement signals a rising talent in Ukrainian sport, offering a moment of national pride during a period of conflict.
