Marco Rubio Contradicts Zelenskyy: U.S. Security Guarantees Won't Apply Until War Ends
Dispute Between Marco Rubio and Volodymyr Zelenskyy
According to Главком: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has refuted a claim by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the terms for providing security guarantees. Rubio responded to Zelenskyy's assertion that Washington was prepared to finalize high-level guarantees once Kyiv agreed to withdraw troops from the eastern region.
According to Rubio, the Ukrainian side has been informed that the security guarantees will not take effect until the war concludes.
“That is a lie. I saw him say it, and it's unfortunate that he says that because he knows it's not true,” Rubio stated.
He further emphasized that this issue is not linked to a condition of 'unless he gives up territory,' and expressed uncertainty about why Zelenskyy would make such statements.
“It's just not true,” he added.
Context of the Disagreement
For his part, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had stated that 'the Americans are ready to finalize these high-level guarantees as soon as Ukraine is ready to exit Donbas.' This public disagreement between the Ukrainian president and the U.S. Secretary of State underscores the complex diplomatic negotiations and security discussions taking place amid the ongoing conflict. Such exchanges highlight the challenging balancing act for Western allies in supporting Ukraine while managing broader geopolitical risks.
The situation illustrates the current tensions in U.S.-Ukraine relations, particularly regarding security assurances during wartime. Clear communication between leaders is crucial, as any misunderstandings could impact strategic decisions and the support the United States provides to Ukraine in its fight for territorial integrity.
Simultaneously, these discussions reflect the difficult geopolitical circumstances Ukraine faces and the necessity for clearly defined terms of cooperation with its international partners.
