Drone Attacks Target Russia

According to Главком: Overnight on March 11th, a series of drone attacks struck multiple Russian regions, resulting in explosions, fires, and significant disruptions to airport operations. Explosions were recorded in:

  • Samara Oblast
  • The Black Sea coast of Krasnodar Krai
  • The cities of Samara, Syzran, Anapa, and Sochi

In Samara and Syzran, at least 10 explosions occurred, with approximately five in Anapa and no fewer than five in Sochi. Airports in Samara, Krasnodar, and Sochi were forced to suspend operations or impose severe restrictions. These incidents are part of a broader pattern of strikes on Russian territory since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A Pattern of Recent Strikes

These attacks are not isolated. On March 8th, drones also targeted the city of Armavir in Krasnodar Krai, striking the facilities of ZAT NP NB YuNK (the Southern Oil Company's Accumulation Transshipment Oil Depot). Earlier, on February 22nd, a series of about ten explosions were heard over Saratov and Engels. On February 12th, a military facility in the village of Kotluban, Volgograd Oblast, was hit, as confirmed by Governor Andrey Bocharov, who also noted falling debris. That same day, a fire broke out at the Progress plant in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast, following explosions.

Consequently, drone attacks within Russia are continuing, with consequences marked by explosions, fires, and significant impacts on airport functionality. The ongoing conflict has increasingly seen such strikes targeting energy and logistical infrastructure deep inside Russia.

These events highlight an escalation of regional tensions and could have serious implications for aviation security. Persistent drone attacks may lead to additional security measures from Russian authorities, which would in turn affect flight routes and schedules. Furthermore, such situations can heighten public anxiety and provoke new political and military responses in the region.
