Massive Russian Strike Paralyzes Kyiv's Electric Transit Network
Coordinated Assault on the Capital
According to Главком: In a devastating overnight attack on July 2, Russian forces struck Kyiv with drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as Zircon hypersonic weapons, targeting residential buildings and critical infrastructure. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed 11 fatalities and over 30 injuries across 28 locations in the city. This assault is the latest in a series of ongoing hostilities that have severely disrupted daily life for millions of Ukrainians.
City Transport Grinds to a Halt
According to Kyivpastrans, the municipal transport operator, damage to overhead contact lines and power outages on certain stretches have caused significant delays for dozens of trolleybuses and trams. Affected trolleybus routes include: No. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 19, 22k, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, and 50. Tram lines No. 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 19 are also experiencing disruptions.
To mitigate the impact, alternative bus services have been introduced. For instance, buses now run from Kontraktova Square to Vidradnyi Avenue, replacing tram No. 14. Trolleybus No. 41 is temporarily substituted by a bus route connecting Toulouse Street to Sviatoshyn Metro Station. Due to road closures on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, bus routes No. 114 and No. 118 have been rerouted via Velyka Vasylkivska Street, Pavlo Skoropadskyi Street, Volodymyrska Street, and back to Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.
This attack underscores the relentless pressure on Kyiv's infrastructure as the war continues to strain essential services. Public transport remains a lifeline for residents, and authorities are working to restore normal operations while prioritizing safety amid escalating military actions.
The recent assault not only targeted Kyiv's infrastructure but also led to significant disruptions in traffic across the city. As the situation evolves, local authorities are grappling with the challenges posed by these attacks.
