Massive Cyberattack Strikes Binance

According to НВ — Техно: On the evening of October 29, 2029, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, was targeted by a devastating cyberattack resulting in the theft of billions of dollars in digital currency. This incident is now recognized as the largest crypto theft in history. Blockchain forensics have attributed the breach to the North Korean hacker group known as TraderTraitor, a team linked to numerous previous high-profile cybercrimes.

Estimates indicate that the total losses from this breach amount to no less than $5.57 billion USD. Among the stolen assets were approximately 1.6 billion USDT and 167,464 ETH taken directly from Binance’s hot wallets. The attack was initiated after hackers compromised the laptop of one of Binance’s DevOps engineers, granting unauthorized access to the company’s service container and enabling illicit transactions. The perpetrators bypassed Binance’s signature verification system by exploiting 50 Ethereum network authorizations.

Impact and Official Response

The stolen funds were swiftly laundered through major market makers and lending platforms. Prior testing of the malicious code on test wallets indicates that the hackers meticulously prepared for the attack. Notably, the hackers’ operational wallet received transfers from the Tornado Cash mixer at least 36 hours before the theft, highlighting a premeditated money laundering strategy.

The FBI has previously identified TraderTraitor as responsible for the February 2025 breach of the Bybit exchange, which involved a theft of $1.5 billion. Experts emphasize,

“This conclusion is based on reliable intelligence sources, both online and offline.”

TraderTraitor is also linked to a series of attacks in April 2026 on KelpDAO, stealing $285 million from Drift and $292 million from KelpDAO, as well as a recent hack of the Bitget exchange in September.

Chainalysis has confirmed the likelihood of TraderTraitor’s involvement in the latest hack, citing patterns consistent with their past operations. Ido Ben-Natan, CEO of Blockaid, explained,

“The attackers compromised the transaction signing infrastructure rather than stealing the private keys themselves, though the exact method of acquiring the required signatures remains unclear.”

This incident underscores the ongoing cybersecurity challenges facing the cryptocurrency industry and raises serious concerns among investors and platform users alike.

The colossal theft not only results in significant financial damage to Binance but also threatens to erode trust in centralized crypto exchanges as a whole. Investors may increasingly hesitate to store assets on such platforms, emphasizing the importance of secure storage solutions. This attack could prompt exchanges worldwide to reevaluate and strengthen their security protocols, investing heavily in advanced technologies to protect their users.

The recent breach at Binance is not an isolated incident in the crypto industry. Similar security vulnerabilities have plagued other platforms, such as the recent data breaches affecting the makers of Foundation and Keystone crypto wallets, which led to the destruction of over 18,000 devices. Understanding these trends is crucial for users to protect their assets in an increasingly hostile digital environment.
