A Ukrainian Mechanic's Daring Rescue: Saving a Flaming Captured T-80 Tank Under Fire
Rescue of a Captured T-80 Tank
According to Главком: Under heavy shelling on the Zaporizhzhia front, a Ukrainian mechanic-driver with the call sign Greg from the 241st Territorial Defense Brigade performed a daring rescue of a burning captured Russian T-80 tank. This particular tank had been seized during the Kharkiv counteroffensive and was positioned with a full ammunition load when incoming shells struck nearby, setting it ablaze. The use of captured enemy equipment has become a significant factor in sustaining Ukraine's defensive efforts.
Despite the extreme danger and the threat from enemy kamikaze drones, Greg made the decision to evacuate the burning vehicle. His evacuation route took him through tree lines, areas known for intense drone activity. Following this high-risk operation, he managed to get the tank to the rear where the flames were finally extinguished. After undergoing repairs and a fresh coat of paint, the T-80 was returned to active service.
Award for Bravery
The brigade command is now preparing to nominate the mechanic-driver for the state Order 'For Courage'. Greg remarked:
"The thought of leaving the machine behind never crossed my mind. It was automatic. We put out what we could and decided to pull it out."
He vividly described the scene:
"I was driving like a green dragon with flaming wings. Everything was on fire."
An officer from the 241st Brigade, call sign Old Man, emphasized the courage required: "To drive a tank out, knowing that 'waiting' drones are there and that you're being targeted-that's a very brave decision." Greg summarized his actions simply: "We are fighting a full-scale war. What did I do? I pulled out a tank. A burning one."
This incident underscores not only the extraordinary bravery of Ukrainian soldiers but also the critical importance of salvaging military hardware in modern warfare. In the face of active combat and persistent enemy threats, preserving equipment can be decisive for maintaining a unit's combat readiness. Greg's actions reflect the high level of self-sacrifice and professionalism demanded by the realities of this conflict.
