Push for Peace and a New Aid Package

According to Главком: At the opening of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Poland, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Russia to enter peace negotiations, freeze the current front line, and halt hostilities. During his address, he also announced a new €4 billion military aid package for Ukraine. The package includes:

  • air defense systems
  • long-range weapons
  • drones
  • ammunition

Berlin has committed to funding the purchase of several hundred missiles for the Patriot system.

International Support for Ukraine

The conference was co-hosted by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. Participants include representatives from the European Union, the G7, and the World Bank. Merz stated that Russia will not win this war and emphasized Europe’s unwavering support for Kyiv.

“Our determination to pressure Russia has already had a significant impact on the Russian economy,” said Friedrich Merz.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Jeremy Lewin confirmed that Ukraine has turned the tide on the battlefield. In 2026, Germany is set to become Ukraine’s most important partner, highlighting Berlin’s growing role in supporting Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict. Merz also stressed that “it is time to enter negotiations, freeze the front line, and stop the killings.”

Negotiations have reached a stalemate, but the conference is discussing critical steps toward restoring peace and stability in the region. This event serves as a key platform for diplomatic efforts and for attracting international investment in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.

Chancellor Merz’s speech reflects the international community’s growing concern over the situation in Ukraine and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. With talks between the sides stalled, Western support for Ukraine-underscored by this new military aid package-remains crucial.

As discussions for peace continue to face challenges, the international community remains united in its efforts to pressure Moscow. This ongoing commitment was evident during the recent G7 meeting, where leaders emphasized the importance of coordinated actions to achieve a resolution.
