Updates to the Model Capability Initiative (MCI)

According to НВ — Техно: Meta has overhauled its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), a program that gathers data on how employees use their computers in order to train artificial intelligence systems. Under the new rules, staff can now pause the tracking of their activity for up to 30 minutes. Additionally, certain groups of workers will be allowed to opt out entirely-a move the company says is meant to boost employee comfort levels.

Which Employees Can Opt Out

Eligibility for opting out includes:

  • Remote workers dealing with unstable internet connections;
  • Those handling confidential materials;
  • Employees who frequently work in locations where keeping a laptop plugged into a power source is difficult.

Still, participation remains mandatory for the majority of staff. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that

“the best way to quickly improve AI models is to observe how very smart people perform tasks on a computer.”

The MCI program was introduced last month amid a wave of major layoffs, during which 8,000 employees were let go. Meta also reassigned thousands of workers to roles focused on artificial intelligence. Zuckerberg emphasized that

“the data is not used for surveillance or performance evaluation.”

The core objective of the project is to teach AI models to replicate the way experienced company employees handle tasks.

Meta has also taken steps to improve the software’s energy efficiency, responding to employee complaints about rapid battery drain. Zuckerberg added that

“if the project proves successful, the company will likely launch more similar initiatives in the future.”

This signals the company’s continued commitment to advancing AI technology while adapting to employee needs.

These revisions to the MCI program reflect Meta’s efforts to accommodate its workforce and foster a comfortable work environment during a period of organizational change. Amid layoffs and a shift toward new technologies, ensuring that employees feel secure and at ease is seen as key to maintaining productivity.
