Microsoft Launches Voluntary Departure Initiative for Employees

According to НВ — Техно: Microsoft has invited approximately 60,000 employees across the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom to voluntarily leave the company in exchange for financial support. This offer targets workers at level 70 and below, including some vice presidents and general managers. The announcement comes just before the release of Microsoft’s quarterly financial results and coincides with the company’s increased investments in artificial intelligence.

With a global workforce totaling around 223,000, Microsoft previously ran a voluntary retirement program in 2026, which was extended to about 8,750 employees. Nearly 30% of those eligible-around 2,600 individuals-accepted the offer. Following this, the company laid off roughly 4,800 staff members, including about 1,600 from the Xbox division. These reductions resulted in an overall workforce decrease of about 2%.

This program provides employees considering departure a supported opportunity to leave on their own terms.

Participants in the program are promised financial assistance and career planning resources to help transition smoothly. Investors are closely monitoring Microsoft’s AI investments, which may influence the company’s future staffing decisions.

Cost Efficiency and Business Restructuring Strategy

This voluntary exit initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to streamline costs and adapt to evolving business conditions, especially amid growing competition in the tech industry. The company’s substantial investments in artificial intelligence necessitate workforce restructuring, making this program a key element in shaping Microsoft’s organizational future. The outcomes of this effort are expected to play a significant role in the company’s strategic direction moving forward.

For an international audience, it’s worth noting that Microsoft’s workforce management reflects a wider trend in the technology sector, where firms are balancing innovation investments with operational efficiency.
