Ukraine's Defense Ministry Triples Drone Purchases in 2026 Compared to 2025
Defense Ministry Boosts Orders to Strengthen Ukraine's Military Industry
According to 5 канал — Економіка: In 2026, Ukraine's Defense Procurement Agency significantly increased its drone acquisitions, securing 300% more unmanned aerial vehicles than in the previous year. Recent months have seen a 5.5-fold rise in drone contracts compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Notably, contracts for FPV drones grew by 54% in 2026, while deliveries of these specialized drones surged nearly 3.7 times.
Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara emphasized the crucial role of drones in fulfilling diverse military missions. He explained that deep strike drones are designed for long-range attacks deep within Russian territory, whereas middle strike drones target enemy drone operators, logistics hubs, and command centers.
"Advanced technology and a sufficient number of systems enhance combat effectiveness while reducing risks to our soldiers." Yevhen Khmara
The increase in drone procurement is supported by international allies and the expansion of Ukraine’s defense industry capabilities. The vast majority of UAVs supplied to the Ukrainian Armed Forces are domestically produced, reflecting a shift in the market that has enabled national manufacturers to scale up production and meet critical frontline demands.
Innovations Advancing Ukraine's Defense Sector
The Ministry of Defense has also introduced licensing procedures for military developments to facilitate serial production. "Predictable contracting allows manufacturers to systematically organize production, plan logistics, and source components," Khmara noted. This approach demonstrates a strategic commitment to meeting military requirements and fostering growth within Ukraine’s defense industry.
Expanding drone orders marks a vital step in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing challenges. Backed by international partnerships and an actively developing domestic defense industry, Ukraine is not only addressing its own military needs but also building potential for future arms exports. This progress contributes to the country’s economic growth and technological advancement.
