Recognizing International Sign Languages Day

According to ДСНС: International Sign Languages Day highlights the crucial need for accessible communication tools for individuals with hearing and speech impairments worldwide. In Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) is proactively advancing barrier-free communication by integrating sign language services within its emergency response system, the 112 Service. Operators at 112 are trained in sign language and can receive calls via video connection. Additionally, the “112 Ukraine” mobile app offers users the ability to submit requests using sign language.

Since the launch of the 112 Service, a total of 77,000 requests in sign language have been recorded, underscoring the high demand for these accessible options. Service professionals promptly handle incoming calls, relay vital information to emergency responders, and maintain smooth communication with applicants. As Ivan Vyhivskyi emphasized,

“This is the fundamental way the 112 Service operates.”

Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion

The MIA website also features a widget enabling users to submit inquiries and receive consultations in sign language. Vyhivskyi highlighted the ministry’s dedication to ensuring that all informational resources remain accessible, stating,

“We prioritize making barrier-free access an integral part of every service the Ministry provides.”

These measures aim to guarantee that every individual, regardless of ability, can access support and protection. Incorporating sign language communication into the 112 emergency system carries significant social impact by fostering the inclusion of people with disabilities within the broader community.

This approach reflects the government’s commitment to equal opportunities for all citizens and to adapting services to meet the diverse needs of the population-a vital step toward promoting social justice and inclusivity.

In addition to the initiatives by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ukrainian Pension Fund is also taking significant steps to enhance communication accessibility. Starting September 23, they will implement sign language interpreters in their services, further bridging communication gaps for individuals with hearing impairments. This effort complements the ongoing commitment to inclusivity in public services, highlighting the importance of accessible communication across various sectors.
