2024 Easter Basket Initiative

According to МЗС: In 2024, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the MHP company, launched a special initiative to assemble and distribute traditional Easter baskets. This project, conducted under a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry and MHP, saw the baskets delivered to Ukraine's friends and international partners following a ministerial meeting of the European Union held in Kyiv. The gesture serves as a poignant reminder of Ukraine's rich culture and enduring spirit during a time of conflict.

The baskets were filled with an array of traditional Ukrainian goods, reflecting the nation's deep cultural heritage. During her visit to Kyiv, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, was personally presented with one of these symbolic gifts. This act highlights the importance of cultural diplomacy and the bonds between Ukraine and its global allies.

Contents of the Easter Baskets

The carefully curated Easter baskets contained a variety of meaningful items, including:

  • Paska (Easter bread) from the 'Vytach' bakery
  • A pysanka (decorated egg) in the Kosiv ceramics technique
  • Honey gingerbread prepared by relatives of the defenders of 'Azovstal'
  • A candle made from natural beeswax from a family apiary in the Lviv region
  • Woven Easter ornaments from Volyn
  • Wine from the Odesa region made from the indigenous 'Odeskyi Chornyi' grape variety
  • A handcrafted Easter chocolate figurine from Lviv
  • A willow basket woven by artisans from the village of Iza in Zakarpattia
  • A greeting card with Easter wishes, signed by the Foreign Minister
Andrii Sybiha, a representative of the Foreign Ministry, stated: 'We share this tradition as a part of ourselves-what shapes us and helps us endure. And what we want to pass on: faith, strength, and the feeling that even in the most difficult times, we do not lose ourselves.'

This initiative is more than a cultural exchange; it is a powerful act of sustaining national morale and identity during a period of immense challenge. By sharing these symbols of tradition, Ukraine underscores the importance of cultural identity and the values that form the core of its national self-awareness. The support shown by international partners, exemplified by the Irish Foreign Minister, demonstrates a meaningful solidarity with Ukraine in these trying times.
