2 MW Solar Power Plant Now Operational at Chernobyl NPP to Support Critical Infrastructure
Introducing the New Solar Power Facility at Chernobyl NPP
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: A newly commissioned solar power plant with a capacity of 2 megawatts has begun operation at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). This installation is dedicated to supplying electricity to essential infrastructure, including the New Safe Confinement structure, radioactive waste management facilities, and spent nuclear fuel storage sites. The project was made possible through collaboration with international partners such as UNDP, Lithuania, and Japan.
Expected to generate over 2 million kilowatt-hours annually, the solar plant will cover approximately 5% of the industrial site's yearly electricity needs. This will result in estimated savings of around $365,000 each year, funds that will be reinvested into upgrading and maintaining critical equipment required for the safe decommissioning of the Chernobyl plant.
Project Funding and International Cooperation
The initiative's budget exceeds $825,000. Lithuania contributed 7,296 solar panels and 17 grid-connected inverters as humanitarian aid, while UNDP, with funding from Japan, provided additional equipment along with installation and commissioning services.
"Generating power on-site enhances Chernobyl NPP’s resilience and reduces dependence on external electricity sources, a vital factor for nuclear and radiation safety. Across Ukraine, solar power capacity has reached 7.6 gigawatts, marking a significant element of our energy stability," stated Denys Shmyhal.
Shmyhal further emphasized, "Producing over 2 million kWh of clean energy annually accounts for 5% of the plant’s consumption, enabling savings near $365,000 per year. These funds will be directed toward modernizing and replacing critical equipment necessary for the safe shutdown of the Chernobyl facility."
Alexander De Croo, representing UNDP, remarked:
"UNDP supports renewable energy development throughout Ukraine to strengthen energy resilience and accelerate the country’s green transition. This solar power plant is currently our largest solar generation project in Ukraine."
Project participant Yo Osumi added, "This solar energy initiative reflects the evolution of bilateral cooperation-from addressing the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster to ensuring nuclear safety amid ongoing conflict."
By reducing reliance on outside power supplies, the new solar station not only boosts the Chernobyl site’s energy independence but also highlights the critical role of international partnerships in advancing renewable energy.
