Coal Fire at Idle Plant Threatens Environment in Ukraine's Lviv Region

Coal burning in mine threatens ecology
Пожежа в застарілому заводі несе екологічні ризики для Львівського регіону в Україні.

Environmental and Industrial Risks at the Chervonohrad Processing Facility

According to Главком: A prolonged shutdown of the Chervonohrad Central Processing Plant (CPP) has triggered serious environmental and industrial hazards. Due to extended storage of coal residues in the facility's bunkers, spontaneous combustion has begun, actively damaging the plant's equipment. As a result, rescue workers remain barred from entering the site, complicating the situation and increasing risks to the surrounding environment. This facility is a key part of the region's coal infrastructure, and its idleness has drawn widespread concern.

Recently, the Commercial Court of Lviv Oblast postponed the hearing on appointing a rehabilitation manager for PJSC 'Lviv Coal Company'. The next court session is scheduled for July 21. These developments have alarmed local residents and experts, who warn of potential consequences for the region's ecology.

'If they destroy the only processing plant, they will ruin the region's environment… And who will answer for the health of the people?'

Mykhailo Volynets, head of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine

Without proper oversight and management, the Chervonohrad CPP could become the epicenter of an ecological disaster, affecting not only industry but also the health of people living in the area. Authorities and responsible agencies must urgently take action to prevent further escalation of the situation.

Urgent Measures Are Needed

The situation at the Chervonohrad CPP underscores the critical need for proper management of industrial facilities, especially during prolonged shutdowns and economic instability. Relevant bodies must implement emergency measures to control environmental risks that could have severe consequences for both local residents and the broader region.

Amid growing public concern, it is essential to ensure transparency in management processes and emergency response efforts.

The ongoing issues at the Chervonohrad Central Processing Plant are compounded by the recent delays in court decisions regarding the facility, raising concerns over the facility's future as the heating season approaches. This uncertainty not only threatens the local economy but also poses significant risks to the environment and public health, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action from authorities.
