Passenger Train Services Suspended at Chop Station Amid Ongoing Rail Electrification to Slovakia
Temporary Halt of Passenger Rail Services
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Passenger train operations at Chop station, located on the Ukrainian-Slovak border, will be temporarily suspended on October 12-13 due to essential maintenance work. According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the Bratislava–Chop train scheduled to arrive at 21:41 on October 12 will not run. Furthermore, on October 13, all passenger trains traveling to and from Slovakia and the Czech Republic via the Chop (Strazh) border crossing will be canceled.
Ukrzaliznytsia later confirmed that trains will operate as scheduled on October 12. Travelers planning trips to Slovakia during this period are strongly advised to check updated schedules and service availability before their journey.
Progress on Electrifying the European Standard Gauge Railway
Meanwhile, Ukraine has completed electrification of the 22-kilometer European gauge rail segment between Uzhhorod and Chop. Work continues on the second phase, involving the stretch from Chop to the Hungarian border at Zahony, with completion targeted by the end of 2026. Once finished, multi-system electric locomotives will be able to cross the Ukraine-Hungary border without the need to change engines, significantly improving cross-border rail efficiency.
This temporary suspension of passenger trains at Chop is part of broader infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing travel comfort and regional connectivity. The ongoing rail electrification and maintenance efforts are expected to strengthen transportation links between Ukraine and neighboring countries, which could boost tourism and economic growth in the region. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about schedule changes and plan their trips accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
As the infrastructure improvements unfold, travelers can look forward to enhanced connectivity, including the ability for direct train services from Europe to Uzhhorod following the completion of the electrification project. This upgrade aims to streamline cross-border travel and improve the overall efficiency of rail transport in the region.
