Romanian Border Sees Highest Number of Illegal Crossing Attempts in First Five Months of 2026
Overview of Ukrainian Border Security in 2026
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: During the initial five months of 2026, Ukrainian border authorities recorded 5,000 attempts to cross the country's borders unlawfully. The majority of these incidents occurred along the border with Romania, a long-standing hotspot for such violations. The border with Moldova ranks second in the number of illegal crossing attempts.
Since the beginning of the year, law enforcement agencies have dismantled 136 criminal groups involved in human smuggling, comprising a total of 510 individuals. In May 2026 alone, 34 such groups with 120 members were uncovered. Border official Andriy Demchenko emphasized,
"We observe the highest number of offenders precisely along this border section. The Moldovan border comes next in frequency."
Despite the ongoing activity, there has been no recent surge in illegal crossing attempts. Demchenko noted,
"Fortunately, we have not seen an increase in the number of illegal border crossing attempts during the latest period."
Maintaining Control and Security
The situation at Ukraine's borders remains stable, largely due to the persistent efforts of authorities who detect and apprehend smuggling networks facilitating unauthorized migration. The primary routes for illegal crossings continue to be:
- The Romanian border
- The Moldovan border
This data highlights the critical role Ukrainian border guards play in combating illegal migration and organized crime. Although attempts to cross illegally remain significant in number, the consistent security environment reflects the effectiveness of law enforcement operations in preventing border-related offenses. Nonetheless, ongoing vigilance and enhanced measures will be essential to uphold safety and order across the region.
