Grenade Attack Targets Police Officers in Storozhynets, Leaving Two Wounded

According to Главком: On February 19 at 10:50 PM in the city of Storozhynets, Chernivtsi Oblast, an individual threw a grenade toward police officers. The assault resulted in injuries to two law enforcement personnel. A 23-year-old patrol officer was hospitalized in serious condition, while a 31-year-old driver from the Police Protection Unit sustained minor physical injuries.

The assailant was apprehended that same night. He was identified as a 48-year-old resident of Storozhynets and a former military serviceman. During the arrest, he resisted law enforcement while holding an explosive device and was found to be in possession of several rounds of ammunition. Police seized the dangerous items during a search of the attacker's vehicle. An urgent search of the detainee's residence was also conducted, leading to the discovery of additional weapons and ammunition. All physical evidence has been sent for expert examination.

Legal Consequences and Police Response

Authorities are currently deciding on formally notifying the detainee of suspicion and selecting a pre-trial restraint measure. Viktor Nechytailo, a police spokesperson, stated:

“We deployed all necessary forces and resources to promptly identify and detain the perpetrator. An attack on the lives of police officers is an especially grave crime. The response will be severe and principled. No individual will evade responsibility.”

This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by law enforcement in Ukraine, particularly amid heightened security concerns.
