A Global Atlas of Volcanic Rocks

According to НВ — Техно: A team of researchers has unveiled a comprehensive global map pinpointing volcanic rock formations associated with rare earth elements. Published in Nature Geoscience on May 27, 2026, the study establishes a clear link between these critical mineral deposits and the oldest, thickest sections of Earth’s continents. For an English-speaking audience, this breakthrough matters because rare earth elements are essential for modern technologies like smartphones, wind turbines, and electric vehicles.

The project is led by Dr. Emily Bowman and Professor Sally Gibson, who also oversees the £1 million research initiative. By analyzing chemical data from roughly 9,000 igneous rock samples, the team was able to generate the detailed map and confirm these geological connections.

Research Team and Future Plans

Geophysicist Professor Sergei Lebedev is also a key member of the research team, actively contributing to the project. Looking ahead, the group plans to extend their investigation to geological structures older than 200 million years. This next phase could offer fresh insights into Earth’s geological history and how rare earth elements are distributed deep within the planet.

Creating a global map that identifies volcanic rocks linked to rare earth elements is crucial for understanding Earth’s geological processes and its resource potential.
