The construction, which began on March 17, brings the total number of Pantsir towers surrounding the compound to 27. Several of the newly built towers are already armed with anti-aircraft missile complexes. This significant reinforcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The air defense systems at Valdai are arranged in two concentric rings of different diameters around Putin's residence. This defensive measure was reportedly implemented in response to a claimed threat; Russia alleged that Ukraine attempted to attack the residence using 91 drones on December 29, 2025. Ukrainian officials denied the allegation, accusing Moscow of using disinformation to justify its own strikes on government buildings in Kyiv.
