The most active phase of these divinations started in late August, right after the Dormition fast concluded. At that time the matchmaking season began, spanning from the Feast of the Virgin until Pylypivka. To determine which direction their future grooms might come from, girls wove the final harvest wreaths out of wheat stalks and floated them on rivers, or tossed viburnum twigs into the wind. They also laid viburnum berries under the doorstep: if the fruits stayed whole through the night, the following year would bring a happy marriage.
