The July 6 Attack on Kyiv

According to РБК-Україна — Lite: In the early hours of July 6, Russia launched a large-scale missile attack on Kyiv, killing 14 people overall-11 of them in the capital-and wounding 46 others. The assault, which kept the city under air raid warnings for roughly five hours, left residents exposed to continuous danger. Maria Kravets, a Kyiv resident, described how her parents’ home had its windows blown out and reported a missile strike right next to a friend’s building.

Key Damage and Aftermath

The heaviest destruction occurred in Kyiv’s Podil and Darnytsia districts. In Podil, a missile struck a nine-story residential building, collapsing part of its entrance section. In Darnytsia, the impact hit a courtyard between apartment blocks. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted military and energy infrastructure, but the dead and wounded in Kyiv were civilians. The nearby city of Vyshneve in Kyiv Oblast also suffered damage, with dozens of homes hit and fires breaking out. Over 500 people were evacuated due to the risk of secondary explosions. Ukraine’s air defense systems failed to intercept the ballistic missiles-a shortfall President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed to insufficient supplies of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems.

'My parents’ windows were blown out, a missile landed next to my friend’s building, our entire neighborhood is covered in smoke, explosions are right overhead making the whole building shake.' Maria Kravets

Kravets also expressed sympathy for those affected, adding: 'This is absolutely brutal. Let’s stay strong.' The attack on Kyiv serves as another tragic reminder of the war’s toll on Ukraine’s civilian population. Despite stated intentions to hit military targets, the consequences for ordinary people are devastating. This incident highlights ongoing threats to civilians and raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defenses, as well as the need for greater international support to bolster protection against such strikes.

In light of the recent missile strikes, it is important to reflect on the previous attacks on Kyiv, such as the one on June 15, which involved a staggering number of missiles and drones, resulting in significant casualties. These incidents highlight the ongoing threat to civilians and the devastating impact of the conflict on urban areas.
