Deadly Drone Strike on Kyiv Apartment Building Claims Two Lives During Night Attack

Night attack on Kyiv: drone hits residential building
Трагічна нічна атака безпілотника на житловий будинок у Києві забрала життя двох людей.

Russian Overnight Assault on Kyiv

According to Главком: A drone struck a nine-story residential building in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district during the early hours of June 15, part of a Russian nighttime attack. The impact sparked a fire that destroyed multiple apartments. Two people-a man and a woman, both around 60 years old-were killed while inside a sixth-floor unit. Rescue crews were only able to reach the victims the following morning.

Strikes on Homes and Cultural Landmarks

The attack also hit the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where the roof of the Dormition Cathedral caught fire. Sacred relics and liturgical items from the monastery were evacuated to safety. In the Pecherskyi district, a five-story residential building was struck, while in Obolonskyi district, a residential building suffered damage between the third and fourth floors.

Additionally, a fire broke out at the National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio after a strike destroyed Ukraine's largest and oldest costume collection, which included roughly 100,000 costumes and three million garments.

Witnesses described the scene as terrifying. Nataliia Hordiienko recounted:

It was horrifying. The apartment that the Shahed drone hit was on fire, and cars below were burning too. They weren't just burning-they were exploding. And we had to walk past them. The distance was about a meter and a half. It was absolutely terrifying.

Another witness, Svitlana, added:

There were so many explosions. It was frightening. The blasts forced my windows open and knocked over my potted plants. I knew it was close by-the windows were shaking. There was thick smoke everywhere.

This latest overnight assault underscores the ongoing threat drones pose to civilians and infrastructure amid the war in Ukraine. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger safety measures to protect residential areas and cultural sites, as well as the critical role of international support in addressing modern warfare challenges facing the country.

The recent drone strike is just one part of a broader pattern of attacks on Kyiv, including significant incidents near the Pochaina Metro and at the historic monastery. These ongoing assaults reveal the precarious situation for residents and cultural sites in the city.
