Germany's Defense Minister Criticizes Trump's Approach to Putin, Reaffirms Support for Ukraine
German Defense Minister's Critique
According to Главком: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump's strategy toward Russian President Vladimir Putin and peace negotiations aimed at ending the war against Ukraine. He stressed that Berlin will continue its support for Kyiv, despite the difficult situation on the battlefield. This criticism comes amid ongoing debates in Western capitals about the best path to a sustainable peace in Europe.
Pistorius stated that Trump's actions have influenced the course of the war and Putin's confidence.
"Unfortunately, the American president influenced the course of the war and Putin's self-confidence when he rolled out the red carpet for him and welcomed him as a friend in Alaska, while simultaneously completely halting military support for Ukraine," he declared.
The minister also noted that 'the American president, unfortunately and unnecessarily, very early on removed the issue of NATO membership from the agenda,' which, in his view, could have been an important point for negotiations.
Battlefield Situation and Continued Support
Pistorius observed that there are currently no significant shifts on the battlefield, but noted that the situation is worsening because, while Putin pretends to negotiate, a war of terror against Ukrainian civilians continues. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of unwavering support for Ukraine:
"That is why it is so important that we do not weaken our support for Ukraine. And if you look at the state of the Russian economy, now is a very opportune time to continue on the chosen course."
Furthermore, the Ukraine Museum has opened in Berlin's Berlin Story Bunker, displaying Russian drones from the 2025 model year and mangled military equipment. This is the only exhibition of its kind in the world outside Ukraine that illustrates the physical brutality of the war. Berlin will continue its military and financial support for Kyiv, despite the complex circumstances. The museum serves as a stark reminder to the German public and international visitors of the war's devastating human and material cost.
Minister Pistorius's statements underscore the importance of international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Germany, as one of Ukraine's key allies, is seeking to strengthen Kyiv's position on the international stage, despite complexities related to the political decisions of other nations. The opening of the museum in Berlin also acts as an important symbol of recognition for the war's brutal consequences and an effort to raise global awareness about the conflict in Ukraine.
