Germany Negotiates Purchase of Thousands of Long-Range Missiles to Strengthen Deterrence Against Russia
Germany Advances Talks to Acquire Long-Range Precision Missiles
According to 5 канал — Економіка: Germany is actively engaging in discussions to procure thousands of long-range, high-precision missiles manufactured in Europe, aiming to bolster its deterrence capabilities against Russia. This move comes in response to delays in delivering American Tomahawk cruise missiles, which could be postponed by up to five years. The German Ministry of Defense is negotiating a contract exceeding 1 billion euros with the U.S. company Covenant to buy Anthem ground-launched cruise missiles, which have a range of over 2,000 kilometers.
In addition, Germany is exploring a joint production and acquisition deal with Ukraine for the Bars cruise missile. According to sources familiar with the talks, the missile’s manufacturer has not been publicly disclosed. German officials are also considering purchasing Ukrainian and Israeli missiles with ranges reaching up to 2,500 kilometers. The German government plans to allocate millions of euros to support Ukraine’s defense industry as part of this effort.
Potential Suppliers and Strategic Initiatives
Among the prospective suppliers are the Dutch firm Destinus, which is developing the Ruta missile, and the German-British startup Hypersonica, working on the hypersonic HS1 missile. Currently, the German military (Bundeswehr) operates Taurus cruise missiles with a range of approximately 500 kilometers. Meanwhile, Covenant has opened a manufacturing facility in Leipzig, Saxony, with plans to produce 1,000 missiles by the end of 2027 and scale up to 5,000 annually starting in 2028.
CDU party leader Friedrich Merz emphasized, 'The German government intends to invest millions of euros to support Ukraine’s defense industry.'
This initiative gained momentum after former U.S. President Donald Trump decided against stationing American military units in Germany. Amid rising regional tensions, Germany is clearly seeking alternative ways to enhance its defense capabilities.
These developments highlight Germany’s determination to strengthen its military readiness in light of threats from Russia, especially considering the setbacks in receiving U.S. weaponry. The collaboration with Ukraine and investments in European defense technologies reflect a strategic commitment to improving Germany’s own armed forces while bolstering regional partners. Such measures could play a crucial role in enhancing European security amid an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape.
As Germany enhances its missile capabilities, collaboration with Ukraine is also on the rise. This partnership aims to produce advanced military technology, including drones and automated systems.
