According to Главком: The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has named Nazar Chepurnyi and Taras Tarasiuk as its Athletes of the Month for February. Chepurnyi secured a gold medal in the vault at a World Cup event for artistic gymnastics, while Tarasiuk earned a silver medal in the individual race at the Junior World Biathlon Championships. Both athletes and their coaches were honored for these accomplishments. This recognition highlights the country's sporting talent pipeline, which continues to develop future stars.
Nazar Chepurnyi, who previously won a bronze medal at the World Championships in October 2025, continues to perform at an elite level. Taras Tarasiuk, in addition to his world championship silver, is also the 2025 European Youth Olympic Festival champion and earlier this year won the mixed relay at the Junior European Championships alongside his sister, Tetiana.
Ukraine's Performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics
While the Ukrainian team concluded the 2026 Winter Olympics without a medal, its athletes delivered strong performances, securing eight top-ten finishes across various events. The most notable results include:
- Sixth place: Angelina Brykina, Oleksandr Okypniuk, and Dmytro Kotovskyi in freestyle skiing (aerials, mixed team), and Yulianna Tunytska with her team in luge.
- Seventh place: Olexandra Moh and Olena Stetskiv in women's doubles luge.
- Eighth place: The mixed biathlon relay team of Dmytro Pidruchnyi, Vitalii Mandzyn, Olena Horodna, and Olexandra Merkushina.
- Ninth place: The women's biathlon team of Olexandra Merkushina, Yuliia Dzhima, Khrystyna Dmytrenko, and Darina Chalyk.
- Tenth place: Kateryna Kotsar in freestyle skiing, as well as Oleksandr Okypniuk and Vitalii Mandzyn in their respective disciplines.
Gennadii Sartynskyi was named Coach of the Month, while Taras Tarasiuk also received the Young Athlete of February award, with his coach being Vasyl Tarasiuk. These achievements underscore the growing potential and international competitiveness of Ukrainian sports.
