Trench Collapse in Ternopil Region Kills One, Buries Rescuers in Second Cave-In
Tragedy in Baikivtsi Village
According to Главком: A man has died after a trench collapsed on him in the village of Baikivtsi, Ternopil region. The incident occurred while the man was performing excavation work in a trench approximately 4 meters (13 feet) deep, which caved in and completely buried him. Such incidents highlight the inherent dangers of excavation work, even for trained professionals.
Other Recent Collapse Incidents
This is not an isolated event in Ukraine. In June 2024, a ground collapse at the 'Vidrodzhennia' mine in the village of Mezhyrichchia, Chervonohrad district, claimed the lives of two miners. That collapse occurred at a depth of over 500 meters (1,640 feet).
Separately, a section of roadway collapsed on Samsen Road in Bangkok, Thailand, near Vajira Hospital. It is notable that this section of road in Bangkok had previously been closed due to construction for a new metro line. The events in Baikivtsi, at the mine, and in Bangkok collectively underscore the serious risks associated with excavation and major construction projects globally.
These incidents, both within Ukraine and abroad, point to the critical importance of strict safety protocols during earthworks and construction. Soil collapses can have catastrophic consequences, necessitating stricter regulations and oversight for such operations. Relevant authorities must take action to implement preventative measures and avoid similar tragedies in the future.
The tragic incident in Baikivtsi is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by workers in hazardous environments. Similarly, a recent event in Irpin highlights the severe consequences of overlooking safety protocols, where a man lost his life after ignoring a signal at a railway crossing. Such occurrences emphasize the necessity for heightened awareness and adherence to safety measures in all areas of work.
